Science Behind the Products

I am often asked how I come up with ideas for golf training aids. Some people think that I come up with these ideas in the middle of the night and all of a sudden there is a new training aid guaranteed to cure your slice in 15 minutes or less.
SCOTT TEACHING
Fortunately the process is a lot more involved than that. As you know I am a CPGA Instructor by trade, and I still work with students of all levels. Inevitably most people come to me with very similar swing faults and problems. As you know, I believe that proprioceptive feedback is essential to the development of motor skills including the golf swing. Golf IQ golf swing aids are designed to give you just such feedback.
The methodology I use to design and build new golf training aids consists of the following 6 stages.
1) Need Identification
This is the critical point of the process. Once I have a few students that have a similar problem, that cannot be solved with conventional instruction methods or a problem that recurs after instruction, I know that I have a problem. At this time I start the second phase of the process.
2) Conceptualization
This is the creative time. I spend some time with my notebook and videotapes of various golf swings thinking about the cause of the problems. This process takes hundreds of drawings and lots of introspection about what can and cannot work. Once I have a concept of something that might work, I scour the market to see if something similar exists. After I have done my market evaluation on my concept and I determine that nothing suitable already exists, I start the third phase of the process.
3) Prototype Development
After I have a drawing of my concept I hand fashion a prototype. Sometimes I make them from wood or from old golf clubs depending on what the concept is. After I have made a few prototypes I take them out to the driving range and test them out myself. After a few swings there are usually a lot of changes to make. So it is back to the drawing board, and after several more prototypes, I will be happy with the look and feel of the initial concept. This usually takes several months. Once I believe that the product is going to do its job I move on to the fourth phase of the process.
4) Professional Testing
At this time, I fashion a few more prototypes and send them off to some other golf professionals. These professionals range from leading teaching professionals to those who play the game for a living. These leading professionals then give honest feedback about how the product works for them and their teaching/playing style. Then it is usually back to the drawing board for more prototype development. Once I have the go ahead from my colleagues I move into the fifth phase of the process.
5) Average Golfer Testing
This is the most important part of the process. We then assemble a group of average golfers that are candidates to use the product in its final form. I then build each of these golfers a prototype.
Before we let them use the product, I videotape their swing using the industry’s leading video analysis software. This footage is saved for later use, at the same time I use a launch monitor to determine their club head speed, ball speed, launch angle and other impact conditions.
I then give each golfer a short primer on how to use the product and then send them on their way. I have them follow the practice routine that is included with the product. After two weeks of practice, I bring the entire group back in and measure the results.
If we are happy with the results we move into the final stage of the process.
6) Production
Assuming that no changes are required, we make an initial order and take them out to the market. Unlike our competitors, we make our products domestically in small batches, therefore, if the product requires modification or customization we can make adjustments as we go. If you have a question about a Golf IQ product, please email us with your feedback and we will do our best to help.
All of the golf training aidsthat you see on this site have gone through this extensive process. And this process is why we are certain that you will improve after you use our products. We stand behind that statement with a complete satisfaction guarantee.
